What this covers
Intermountain's program applies to bills from Intermountain hospitals, clinics, and some providers it employs, for most care a medical provider decides is needed. It does not cover bills from outside providers, such as an independent physician group. Intermountain says nobody needing emergency care is denied treatment because they lack insurance or cannot pay.
Who qualifies
- Income up to 500% of the poverty level. Eligibility depends on family size and gross annual household income compared with the current Federal Poverty Guidelines, which update every year. Help decreases as income rises, according to Intermountain.
- Above 500%: medical hardship. Intermountain says people over 500% are reviewed for medical hardship. The pages we reviewed do not state the hardship threshold, so ask a financial counselor.
- Billing cap. People who qualify will not be charged more for emergency or other medically necessary care than the amounts generally billed to insured patients.
For scale, using the 2026 poverty level of $15,960 for one person and $5,680 for each additional person, 500% works out to about $79,800 for one person and $165,000 for a family of four. That is Billmira's own arithmetic, not a figure Intermountain publishes, and Intermountain applies its own current guideline table.
The pages we reviewed do not say which income levels get free care and which get partial discounts. Ask when you apply.
Uninsured discount
Uninsured hospital patients who don't qualify for other programs, such as Medicaid, receive an automatic discount on their bill. Contact the hospital that treated you for the amount.
How to apply

Intermountain's financial counselors can also check whether you qualify, set up a payment plan, and help with Medicaid or Supplemental Security Income. The pages we reviewed do not list an application deadline, so ask when you call, and apply as soon as you get a bill.
